Stephen Hawking is a name that hardly anyone in the world would not be aware of. The legendary physicist took off for his heavenly abode earlier today.

According to a report on BBC, he died peacefully at his home in Cambridge.

Hawking was known for his work with black holes and the theory of relativity. He wrote several popular science books including A Brief History of Time, which is one or highest selling books of all times.

Hawking gained more popularity because of his fight against his physical disability. At the age of 22, Hawking was given only a few years to live as he had been diagnosed with a rare form of motor neurone disease.  Due to the illness he was left to be stuck in a wheelchair for the rest of his life. Also,  he was unable to speak except through a voice synthesiser.

Hawking was portrayed in both TV and film by popular actors. On TV, he was brought to life by Benedict Cumberbatch and on film, he was presented on screen by Eddie Redmayne in The Theory of Everything, which charted Hawking’s rise to fame and relationship with his first wife, Jane. Eddie won an Oscar for the portrayal as well.

Shah Rukh Khan wrote, “‘Remember to look up at the stars and not down at your feet. Try to make sense of what you see, and wonder about what makes the universe exist...’ thank u Stephen Hawking, for making the world we know & we don’t know, a place to look positively at.



Kamal Haasan tweeted, “Thank you for the time you spent with the people of this world Mr. Stephen Hawking. The world will cherish your memory (sic).”


Farhan Akhtar penned, “RIP Stephen Hawking. A major loss to the scientific community & to the millions he inspired through his work and life. Condolences to the family (sic).”
